New members, please read all rules before posting. If you have any questions on how to post, please read the Frequently Asked Questions thread.
If you have any suggestions on these rules or the guidelines for commenting and critiques, post here.
Respect all members. No cursing and/or offensive language (including signatures, avatars, and links) - If you curse, your post will be edited. You will then receive a warning from me. If you continue to curse, you will be banned.
No flaming and/or trolling - If you see a flamer or troll, please report to me immediately. Stay out of the thread! Replying to the flamer or troll will only make it worse.
Post in the appropriate section - Threads that are posted in the wrong section may be moved or deleted without notice.
No spamming - Please do not double post. If you had just made a comment and forgot something, use the edit button. If you made double or triple posts by accident, please delete them. Do not post repeatedly.
Update 9/17/09
Also, we DO know that there are several spam-bot accounts active on this board. Should you see any posts that redirect to anything like "www.buyvogue.com" or "www.buycheapnikeripoffs.com" where the post has nothing to do with the subject of the thread, (I.E. a post about nike shoes for sale in a gallery thread) then please report the user and PM Mangaka 7 or WoahStripes with links to the threads. Do not respond to these posts in your threads, act like they don't exist, and report / pm.
Stick to the topic - Please stay on topic when you are replying to another member's thread. If you have something you want to talk about that's out of topic, talk to the member via profile or private message. Out of topic replies are considered spam and may be deleted.
No multiple threads - If you have many drawings to post at one time, please put them all together in one thread. Do not make a thread for each drawing. If you do, they will be merged.
If you already have a thread on the first page, update it.
If you prefer, you can create your own gallery thread. A gallery thread is a thread with ALL of your drawings.
Contests - No more than three contests may run at once. If you want to start a contest, you must contact me (mangaka7) for approval first. You may start the contest after it is approved. If you start the contest before you contact me, it will be locked or deleted. Do not contact me about starting a new contest if there are already three running. Contact me only after one of the contests end.
The deadline for all contests in HTDM should not exceed one month. All contests should be posted in the Member Contests section of the forum.
Replying to/reviving old threads -
Book Reviews and Comments, General Discussions, My Favorite Manga - In these sections of the forum, it is fine to revive old threads as long as you are contributing to the topic. If there is currently a related thread, do not revive an old one.
Introduce Yourself Here - Do not revive threads that are old. No one needs to be welcomed weeks after joining the forum.
The Gallery - Do not revive old threads unless you have something relevant to add to the discussion or you are updating your "gallery thread".
To prevent accidents, please look at the dates carefully before replying.
Write clearly - This is an international forum and there are members from all over the world. When posting, please try to use proper grammar and punctuations so that all the members can understand you. Use the Spellcheck if you have trouble spelling. Avoid slang terms and shortened words.
Post your images (including signatures) in a reasonable size - Try to keep the width of your images low so that the members don't have to scroll a lot. If your image is very big, use a link.
Signatures - Signature images are automatically resized if they exceed a width of 350 px. Please keep your signature area as small as possible. Do not write paragraphs or stack mutliple images.
Nudity and gore - All threads containing images of nudity and/or gore should be marked with an age warning. Do not embed your drawings. Use links. We have a lot of young members here in HTDM. Here is an example of a thread with a proper warning.
Nudity drawing (18+ only)
Nudity and gore is not allowed in signatures and avatars.
Embedded images will be deleted immediately and you will receive a warning in your edited thread/post.
(Update 03/02/2009)
Ecchi - We have decided to make a definitive ruling on "ecchi" content. The ruling is as follows:
Ecchi - artworks that depict men or women in lucrative and sexually provocative poses (whether tame or explicit) wherin the character is either partially nude or wearing very little clothing / a suggestive pair or perspective of underwear is visible. These images are not work-safe and are images you would not want to be caught browsing at school, work, or at home with wife / parent / etc. The minimum age for viewing ecchi on this site is 16. Please designate your posts as containing NSFW Ecchi material in your title. I.E. "Ecchi works, NSFW 16+" and so on.
Examples include but are not limited to:
1. Panty shots (underwear is revealed)
2. Skimpy clothing such as lingeries, nightwear, costumes, etc.
3. Nipple protrusion
Also, since determining if an artwork qualifies as an ecchi is difficult for new posters and even some more seasoned members, mangaka7 and WoahStripes will have the final say, as Mods, about whether a piece is deserving of a warning in the title, or deletion if the Original Poster does not add a warning. All Moderator decisions are final.
Pornography - Any type of pornography posted on this forum will be removed immediately. You will be banned.
(Update 03/17/2009)
Polls -If you make a poll (except for in Member Contests) please specify that it is to last 30 days before automatically closing (You will see the option right before the button to post the poll.) After 30 days, the topic or question isn't going to be relevant anymore, but it will still be open to discussion. (Mods will decide how long your poll in Member Contests should last) Any polls posted in GD without special permission to be open more than 30 days will have their closing time updated (I.E. if you had an "infinite poll" open for three days already, you would then have 27 days left after we edit it.)
Guidelines for Commenting and Critiques
Special thanks to Pharan for providing these links. If any of you have suggestions for the GCC, please let me know.
How to Give Criticism by Ellen Million
How to Accept Criticism by Ellen Million
Hey all, this is WoahStripes.
Let's chat for a minute about critiquing, shall we?
Okay, first off, I chose to amend this section personally because concise and proper critique is something I care dearly about. For those of you who read the helpful Ellen Million tutorials, this is somewhat of a recap, but with some expectations and rules for this forum built in.
-We don't expect soul-felt critique and powerful insights. The purpose of a critique is to help people. Spouting stuff like the inherent innocence of children and their mastery of simple artwork is great, but not necessary.
-We DO expect critiques to be at their basest level, helpful. I want to make this crystal clear. "Cool" "Your so good, it's incredible!" "OMG Sw33t!!" and the like are NOT critique. These are isolated thoughts to be added onto the end of a critique. I'm not saying you can't tell someone how cool their stuff is, but at least tell them WHY you think so, don't spam their post with useless comments. Those found to be spamming posts will be warned, and then have their posts removed.
-Harsh critiquing is allowed (not recommended), but mean critiques are NOT allowed. What's the difference? Let's take a look at a real critique that I recieved myself a while ago:
Allright mate, Im not here to cause trouble or rave or rant....... but, the reason you dont get any favs or comments is because you keep posting stuff up like this. I wonder how proud you are now that your recieveing "pity comments" on the HTDM board(Personally i would not prefer them). Like your recent pic:..............................................
*) Its not even finished.
*) Strokes are far to bold and obvious.
*) The lady is missing lips, facial and hair clarification
*) It looks Very lazily done.
*) Color although realistic looks flat
While this is a very harsh critique, and borders on a Mean Critique, it is still useful. Of course, here we won't stand for you calling someone lazy but you get the picture. Mean critique is different in the fact that it is not helpful, and is obviously either venting or a personal attack. Like "The eyes are too big, you suck at drawing realistic eyes) What Ellen Million said stands. Do not attack a person's skills, i.e. "You suck at shading". It should be "This piece's shading needs work." Anyone found attacking members of this community will have their post(s) removed. If the member attacks again, they will be banned. (I'm going to note now that you're probably not going to make any friends critiquing harshly, most artists on here are beginners and don't know how to properly handle a harsh crit, so it's in your best interests NOT to use this type of crit.)
-If someone says something about your work and you don't understand what they mean, do not take it to be negative. "Your drawings make me laugh" is not necessarily a bad thing, most likely the user meant to say "I love your humorous pieces, they're very amusing!". Remember, not everyone on here speaks your language. Make sure you clarify before you take what they say to heart.
-We cannot ban someone because they didn't like your work. Unless they were mean about it and attacked you. You may ask the critiquer to not post in your threads anymore, or just ignore their crits. Remember, they just want to help. HOWEVER, if they persist in posting in your threads and it is apparent that they have become personal attacks, action will be taken, just notify myself or Mangaka7.
-By all means, if you have a question instead of a critique, go ahead and ask. Same if you have a comment about something that RELATES to the work directly and you think it would be helpful to discuss / let the OP know. This is still a discussion board, after all.
-Do NOT give ultimatums. I've seen this far too much, some even on this board. Don't make it seem like an ultimatim either. I just finished apologizing to a member here because they thought I issued them an ultimatim, so just another example of being careful. Say things like "What if you did ___" or "How about if ____" or "If it's possible, could I see ____" instead of "You need to ____" or "Show me_____". You're not the best artist in the world. You can't tell people what they NEED to do....(only what you THINK they need to do.
)
Alright gang. I know this section is a very large one, but since the gallery is a very large part of the community, I believe it to be important. For the structure of a good critique, see the Ellen Million tutorials, specifically the first one. In general though, it goes like:
1)Good thing(s)
2)Thing(s) to work on
3)Good thing (s)
4)General feel of the piece ./ what you think the artist was trying to accomplish, mood, message, etc.
'Sandwhich' it so that the artist walks away with a good impression and at the same time the knowledge on how to improve. You can structure your crits in a different way, just so long as it helps the artist improve. After all, isn't that what we're all here for?

I never aimed at anyone especially
you when I was thinking these guides. all I'm suggesting is that SHOULD the need arises.
Anyway, I agree that it really does seem
a lot for the members but I'm also open for some suggestions
'Master of Manga' I like
the sound of that
anyways (would
you allow 'anyways'?) I don't usually curse ... unless I'm in pain ...or something yeah I'm being pretty unnecessary now ...
Oh wait could you say 'OH CHRIST!!!' or
'JESUS!!!' or is that offensive to other christians?
